National Sun Yat-sen University Celebrates the Grand Opening of Taiwan Centers in the Philippines

National Sun Yat-sen University (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) is celebrating the Grand Opening of the Joint Office of the Taiwan Education Center-Philippines (TEC) and the Resource Center for Economics, Industry and Academy Cooperation, NSYSU (RCEIAC) at the First Global Building in Manila on September 29, 2017. Guests at the ceremony are Political Deputy Minister Leehter Yao of the Ministry of Education (MOE), Ambassador Dr. Gary Song-Huann Lin of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines (TECO), Chairman Angelito T. Banayo of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), Former Commissioner Dr. Alex Brilantes, Jr. from Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Director-General Andy Cheu-An Bi of the Department of International and Cross-strait Education (MOE), and President Dr. Ying-Yao Cheng of the National Sun Yat-sen University. Representatives of several Taiwanese Business Associations in the Philippines are also present to witness this historical moment.

President Ying-Yao Cheng states that NSYSU has the responsibility to establish collaboration with Southeast Asia, in particular the Philippines, in academia and economics through the collaboration and exchanges of talents. This is part of the University’s social responsibility to contribute to regional development in the greater Kaohsiung area due to the university’s strategic location in Southern Taiwan as a gateway to Southeast Asia. The Taiwan Education Center-Philippines (TEC) and the Resource Center for Economics, Industry and Academy Cooperation, NSYSU (RCEIAC) will be a crucial window in achieve these goals.

Vice President, Dr. Chih-wen Kuo, of the Office of International Affairs at NSYSU points out that this is the first in the Philippines to set up the Taiwan Education Center (TEC). The main function of the TEC is to provide a bridge between Taiwan and the Philippines for collaboration in academia and research, on top of providing Mandarin language programs.

Director of the RCEIAC, Dr. Hung-Jeng Tsai, expresses that today’s opening is a Beginning—for the Philippines and Taiwan to build common ground for collaboration under the goodwill of the Taiwanese government with mutual interests and benefits with industries and exchanges of talents.

The two Centers with a joint office is located in the heart of the action in Makati City, Metro Manila and offers convenient access. The centers are non-profit organizations supported by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan.
