2024 Taiwan-Philippines Medical University Leaders Forum

Taiwan Education Center in the Philippines Advances Medical Academic Partnerships through 2024 Taiwan-Philippines Medical University Leaders Forum
The Taiwan Education Center (TEC) in the Philippines, hosted by National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), successfully facilitated the “2024 Taiwan-Philippines Medical University Leaders Forum” in Sihziwan, Kaohsiung. Co-organized with NSYSU, the forum convened 35 leaders and faculty members from leading medical and nursing universities in the Philippines, alongside nearly 100 scholars from both Taiwan and the Philippines, marking a major step forward in bilateral academic cooperation.
With TEC's active coordination and longstanding commitment to advancing Taiwan-Philippines educational exchange, the forum focused on key areas such as medical education systems, clinical internships, joint research, and academic mobility frameworks. Long-term goals such as faculty exchange, dual-degree pathways, and shared research initiatives were also explored to foster sustained institutional partnerships.
Filipino participants expressed strong interest in Taiwan’s medical education model and acknowledged its advanced laboratory infrastructure, robust medical research capabilities, and the effectiveness of its National Health Insurance system. These elements were widely seen as valuable reference points for the development of medical training systems in the Philippines. In return, Filipino scholars highlighted their own global internship programs, which regularly place students in institutions across Europe, the United States, and ASEAN countries—offering insights that Taiwan may draw from to expand its internationalization strategies.
In addition to forum discussions, TEC arranged institutional visits to several of Taiwan’s top medical universities, including National Taiwan University, Chang Gung University, and Kaohsiung Medical University. These visits offered Filipino delegates first-hand exposure to Taiwan’s medical curriculum, research environments, and teaching practices—further deepening mutual understanding and laying the groundwork for future collaboration.
Looking ahead, TEC will continue to promote multifaceted cooperation between Taiwan and the Philippines and further strengthen the partnership between academic institutions in both countries. By facilitating meaningful academic dialogue and exchange, TEC remains committed to building lasting and inclusive regional collaboration in education.
